Cheney says the Republican candidates have no problems
Vice President Dick Cheney told ABC News Radio that Senator John McCain’s age of 70, Rudy Giuliani’s three marriages, and Mitt Romney’s faith of Mormonism should not be problems in the upcoming election. Vice President Dick Cheney must be kidding himself.
A) Age is what lost Nixon the election against Kennedy. Plain and simple, youth makes a presidential candidate look good. And recently, it kind of looks like McCain has cheek cancer. He’s getting some mighty jowls. I don’t have to be ageist or anti-McCain (neither of which I am) to realize that the American voting public is the same group of people who vote for American Idol.
B) Either Giuliani’s three marriages won’t be a problem for him in the election, or gay marriage won’t be an issue for the Republicans in the future. It’s either-or, fellas. You can’t back a candidate who’s said “till death do us part” three times and then turn around and blither on about sanctity of marriage. Just a fact.
C) We’ve only had one Catholic president. I simply don’t think America is ready to accept a Mormon president. Most of the United States isn’t even willing to accept Mormons on the whole!
I’m not saying they’re not good candidates - I think we could all do a lot worse than these three fine men. I’m just saying that it will be an uphill battle for each of them for the above reasons.
Dick Cheney, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Republican Primaries
